This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate bridge and gantry cranes.
A bridge crane consists of one or more hoisting mechanisms (up/down) arranged to traverse a bridge (east/west) formed by a beam or beams, which are mounted to carriages at each end, with the entire assembly able to traverse elevated runways (north/south).
A gantry crane is somewhat similar, but rather than elevated runway rails, the bridge is supported at one or both ends by legs mounted to end carriages capable of travelling on supporting surfaces or deck levels, usually on rails.
This licensing unit applies to those persons who operate a bridge or gantry crane from a permanent cabin/control station mounted to the crane, OR, persons that operate a remotely controlled bridge or gantry crane having more than the 3 standard powered operations (i.e. 1. = up/down, 2. = north/south, 3. = east/west).
